I have been a registered nurse for 30+ years. I started my journey in long term care for 5 years I moved to an acute care, for 20 years I worked medical surgical unit, ICU,PCU, TRAUMA, CARDIAC, BURN & ONCOLOGY. I returned to long term care. I have experienced many phases of life and death. I have seen sickness and I have seen wellness. In May 2023 I graduated from Transformative nurse coach class. I am finally certified and ready to assist patients with their health care journey. What is a Nurse Coach? A Nurse Coach is a registered nurse who integrates coaching competencies into any setting or specialty area of practice to facilitate a process of change or development that assists individuals or groups to realize their potential. What do nurse coaches do? Professional nurse coaching is a skilled, purposeful, results-oriented, and struc-tured relationship and person-centered interaction with a healthcare consumer that is provided by a baccalaureate-prepared or advanced practice registered nurse for the purpose of promoting achievement of a person’s goals (Hess et al., 2013). Note: The word ‘client’ is used interchangeably with ‘patient’ through-out this document. Achievement of the person’s goals is accomplished by first establishing a co-creative partnership with the individual, acknowledging that they are the expert in their own care. The nurse sets aside the expert role and instead assists the person to identify and prioritize desired areas for change. Thus, goals originate from clarifying and identifying the person’s agenda.
